Philosophy:
Philosophy is "the study of wisdom, knowledge and the nature of reality." The Roman philosophy is called Stoicism. It is a Greek school that became very popular in Rome. Stoics believed in a godly way of learning ruled over nature. Their soul is what starts a divine or godly intelligence. Living in a way that is with nature was "living rightly." The best thing in life according to the Stoics are their character. This is having courage and self-control. Stoics wanted duty, and welfare first, instead of their comfort. They are famous for bearing pain and suffering. |
Law and Justice:
Marriages, inheritance, and agreements were covered by Roman law. Some other parts of life were also controlled by the Roman Law. Other places are also controlled by the modern legal code. The Romans believed there was a law of justice. Every person has rights from this law. In court, the judges tried to make respectful decisions. They didn't treat everyone equally, for example slaves were not treated well, while the rich were treated greatly. some laws were made because emperors wanted to and had the power to. |
Citizenship:
When Rome expanded to Italy, to become a Roman you had to make a promise to be loyal, or to be a good citizen of Rome. Everyone could become a citizen, even when they are from Syria or Gaul, which is modern day France. All Roman citizens had Roman laws, the same rights, and owed loyalty to the emperor. Responsibility and a privilege was the idea of citizenship. Most people, are citizens at birth, but some become citizens when they move from another country. They also created a bill of rights for the people to follow. |
